A Wild Idea of a Project
The Familiar Wild or What Animal Are You, Really?
By: Brigid & Sonja
Project Description
This project explores identity, AI imagery, and digital social interaction. We ask 27 participants to identify an animal that represents their personality or lived experience (rather than just a "favorite"). Using ChatGPT, we transformed participants' photos into these chosen animals. The resulting "hybrids" were curated on a password-protected digital platform (Padlet) to spark dialogue about personal storytelling and the increasingly prominent role of AI-generated imagery in our culture. Our approach is a compromise between Brigid’s idea of pet messaging and Sonja’s pet personality research. We shifted the focus to human identity through animal personification to balance storytelling with manageable technical execution. We divided the workload: Brigid edited the photos and found most people, and Sonja organized the technical aspects on both Google Form and Padlet, for the 27 participants and their respective AI image manipulations. The project relies on shared authorship. Participants provide the self-reflective narratives and portraits, while we curate them into a cohesive digital gallery. Participants were notified via email and encouraged to engage with others' posts to foster a social dimension within the tech-driven space. Because we strive to protect our participants' and their privacy, I have not included the link to the Padlet. Instead, I will include a photo of myself and the animal I chose (a honey bee) to show a visual example.
