Unit 2 Digital Collage: Creative Experiment Digital Collage: The Reading Dragon
For most of my life, reading was a source of fear rather than joy. Having dyslexia meant that reading simple text was a constant struggle, making books feel like a world I could not touch. This changed entirely when I discovered audiobooks. Hearing stories read aloud transformed my anxiety into curiosity; suddenly, I wasn’t just “reading,” I was visualizing. Audiobooks recaptured the magic of my childhood when my father would read aloud to me at night, turning stories into a shared, living experience. Whether it’s a romance or a fantasy adventure, audiobooks allow me to experience narratives as if they are being performed specifically for me.
Inspired by Reading Rainbow, The Reading Dragon continues this tradition. I used Photoshop to layer the alphabet in the background to show the barrier I once faced, and layered this against the vivid, glowing imagery of the fantastical creatures that audiobooks spark in my mind today. This collage allows me to combine traditional "bookish" elements with fluid forms that represent my digital freedom. This project is about externalizing my reality and turning a lifelong struggle into a creative superpower and fostering a lifelong love of reading.

ReplyDeleteHi Sonja! This is strong and clear, the idea comes through right away and the contrast between the alphabet as a barrier and the imagined imagery works well. The personal connection carries the piece and gives it direction. You could push it further by making the interaction between those layers more active, so the tension feels less separated and more integrated in the image.
